Legendary Route 66 Completes its Journey

(PRWEB) August 3, 2005

As a prelude to two Route 66 books, coming out later this year, this online information about the Mother Road is by far, more extensive than most, and not only delves into Route 66, but also, the history of the many towns that this historic pavement passes through From vintage icons along the old highway, including such places as the Cozy Dog Drive-In in Springfield, Illinois; Wrink’s Market and the Munger Moss Motel in Lebanon, Missouri; or the Snow Cap Drive-In in Seligman, Arizona, this site continues to reach deeper into history.

If you thought that Route 66 was nothing more than an old weed-choked road dotted with motels and diners from the 1940’s, you’ll find that there is plenty more when driving this chunk of asphalt. From Civil War sites in Missouri and Oklahoma, outlaws in Texas and New Mexico, to the numerous gold mining camps of Arizona, the sights along this old highway are incredible.

Legendary Route 66, part of Weiser’s extensive look at the west on http://www.LegendsOfAmerica.com gives readers an in depth feel for this American classic. From the buttery smell of popcorn at the drive-in theater to a greasy burger at the local diner, Weiser takes you deeper into the cities and towns they were famous for, all the way back to the Old West. Towns like Holbrook Arizona, once said to have been “too tough for women or churches;” Tucumcari New Mexico, once referred to as “Six-Shooter Siding,” and Galena Kansas, the site of much bloodshed during its coal mining days.

As an added bonus, you will also find interesting side trips, numerous lakes, state and national parks, and historical sites — pages and pages of Americana that come to life, including a few surprises along the way. Product Description
It started in the heartland and originally ended in Los Angeles (not, contrary to myth, at the ocean). It carried truckers crossing the country, Okies fleeing the Dust Bowl, vacationers seeking the sun. It was America’s Main Street, the Mother Road, the Will Rogers Highway, and, at its dangerous curves, Bloody 66. Get your kicks on Route 66 with this wonderfully illustrated tribute to the best-loved highway in this car-loving nation. Michael Witzel shares his expertise and wealth of personal, archive, collector, and contributing photographer images in these pages, offering a nostalgic tour of the charms and oddities of this road through American cultural history.

Starting in Chicago and running to Santa Monica, this book highlights the sights along the highway with historic and current photos in then-and-now pairings, and includes Route 66 postcards, road signs, trinkets, maps, brochures, and advertisements. Here we see Route 66 as it was in its heyday and as it is now, the neon glamour of yesterday versus the ghost towns of today. Witzel and his wife, Gyvel Young-Witzel, recount the highway’s history, its role in popular culture, and its demise, as well as the individual stories of famous sights. Several profiles of those with close ties to the Mother Road, including the woman who played Ruthie Joad in the The Grapes of Wrath film, are included.

Take the Legendary Road Trip to Route 66

Posted by: admin   in Route 66

Route 66 probably got its recent publicity from Disney’s Pixar film ‘Cars’ and you can bet that “Lightning McQueen” and his car friends did not fall in love with Route 66 for nothing! Discover the legendary road trip through Route 66, which is known to be one of the most breathtaking scenic drives in America.

How it all began:

Route 66 is a highway constructed in the mid-1920′s to answer the demands of the fast evolving United States economy at that time. Route 66 differs from other roads of that era, such as the Lincoln and the Dixie, because it did not follow the conventional linear path. Instead, it sprawled diagonally to connect the rural communities in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas to the towns of Chicago. There is so much to see in these towns that they should be part of any road trip. Check out the town of Galena, which is in the north-western tip of Illinois. There are several museums and historical homes there for a truly “walk down history lane” experience.

Route 66 was originally built to enable the transport of farming goods along the way. This was very difficult to accomplish before the creation of Route 66. Aside from farmers, the other sector that most benefited from the highway was the trucking industry. Offering considerably milder weather compared to the harsher climate found along the northern roads, Route 66 proved to be a better option for many truck drivers.

The evolution:

During the years before and after WWII, Route 66 thrived with the establishments built along the highway. There were inns and motels, gas stations and just about every kind of caf?ou can think of. Tourists flocked to the road just for the thrill of being there, and to experience what was then considered the “Main Street of America.”

During the Great Depression, Route 66 bore witness to thousands of people migrating from the Industrial East to the more promising suburban towns in Southern California (San Diego, Hollywood, Los Angeles, etc.) The road became a symbol for hope. The Route 66 road trip tells a unique American story.

You can opt for a full length Route 66 adventure or break it out into bites, like visiting the Albuquerque section. Plan your trip around Attractions, Hotels, and Restaurants that include Route 66 in their offerings. There is so much to see around Route 66 that you will never run our of things to explore. Just the names are intriguing: Restaurants like Artichoke Cafe and Left at Albuquerque, or hotels like the Route 66 Inn, and attractions like the Route 66 Drive-In Theatre, National Route 66 Museum, and the International Route 66 Mother Road Festival.

Your next great adventure is just an interstate highway away!
