Route 66 Photo Workshop given by Image Quest near Barstow, California

In February 2010 Image Quest gave a 2-day photo workshop tour focusing on relics from US highway route 66 in the vicinity of Barstow, California. The twenty or so photographers in the group were supported by 3 experienced photographers, including Dave Wyman (the leader), Ken Rockwell, and Richard Nolthenius. The workshop is called the “Cultural Mirages: Route 66 and the Mojave Desert” event. The group consisted of people from all over the US and there was a photographer from Canada, from England, and from Malaysia as well. One object of the workshop was to provide the attendees with a wide variety of subject matter to photograph — mostly found objects. This video shows the locations of the photography. There is a display of some photos taken by one photographer with a point and shoot camera set on automatic which can be viewed by visiting the website www.wxyzvideos.com and looking for “Route 66 Photos” — these demonstrate the variety of subject matter available. Places we photographed were the Route 66 Museum, Roy’s Motel and Cafe, the Bagdad Cafe, and the Bottle Tree Ranch.

Southern California consists of the land in California south of the Tehachapi Mountains. Most of Southern California’s population is centered in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego; the total population of Southern California is nearly 24 million. Southern California borders Mexico in the South, the Pacific Ocean on the West, and Arizona and Nevada make up the areas eastern border. Counties within Southern California: Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and San Diego are among the 15 most populous counties in the United States. Southern California is also known as So Cal.

Southern California is home to several different industries. The Tech Coast is made up of the Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Ventura counties. The Tech Coast consists of Universities, research institutes and multi-technology companies. Major Universities in the region include: The University of Southern California, The University of California, Los Angeles and The California Institute of Technology. There is a long list of distinguished technology corporations within the Tech Coast, two of the most well know corporations are Google and Yahoo!. The Tech Coast is also home to the following research institutes: The Aerospace Corporation, Beckman Research Institute, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and many more.

In addition to the Tech Coast, Southern California is the capital of the entertainment industry: Hollywood, Sony Pictures, MGM, 20th Century Fox and The Walt Disney Company are a few notable destinations and companies located in Southern California. Southern California also plays host to a long line of surf and skateboard clothing companies. Companies like O’Neil, Sector 9, Quicksilver and Volcom help maintain the robust Southern California economy.

Southern California is made up of 12 counties. South of San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains: Imperial, San Diego, Riverside, Ventura, Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino. North of San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains: Northern Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita), Northern San Bernardino (Mohave Desert), Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Kern.

Real estate in Southern California is often considered overvalued and many areas in Southern California are home to the most expensive real estate in the world. However, developing areas such as the San Bernardino County and Riverside County are providing many home buyers with affordable new home options. Although new homes in big Southern California cities like Los Angeles and San Diego are often expensive, these cities offer world class design options, amenities and quick access to seek after destinations. The lack of available real estate near the downtown areas of these large cities leaves home buyers with little detached new home opportunities.

Mojave Desert runoff event | 3 Sept 2007 | Adelanto, Calif

This video – recorded between 1830 and 1900 hours on 3 September 2007 – depicts flooding in the Mojave Desert of the southwestern United States along Koala Road near the desert community of Adelanto in San Bernardino County, California.

The runoff depicted in this video was probably the result of a somewhat high-intensity precipitation event produced by a thunderstorm that occurred some miles (kilometers) away from Koala Road. The runoff may have generated a sheet of water known as ‘overland flow’ which eventually found its way into the nameless channel shown here.

This particular channel flows in a generally northerly direction draining a portion of Baldy Mesa and the sedimentary geomorphic surface known as the Victorville Apron located more than 10 miles (~16 kilometers) to the south of Adelanto. The channel is a tributary to a much larger stream channel called Fremont Wash. Fremont Wash funnels runoff from channels draining the Victorville Apron/Baldy Mesa area as well as east-flowing channels draining the Shadow Mountains located to the northwest of Adelanto. Fremont Wash is a tributary to the allogenic Mojave River – the main stem stream for this part of the Mojave Desert. Fremont Wash flows in a generally northeasterly direction forming a confluence with the Mojave River near the community of Helendale. Helendale is located on old Highway 66 in San Bernardino County, California.

The stream channel shown in this video is just one of thousands of nameless channels in the Mojave Desert in which water flows only when there is sufficient hydrologic input. Though common enough features in desert landscapes around the world, such stream channels may be dry for years or even decades at a time. Streams with such an unprecitable, non-seasonal flow regime are referred to as “ephemeral” streams.

It is common in deserts for the runoff generated by a storm in one area to flow across the desert for great distances (many miles/kilometers) to fill a stream channel in an area where no rain is falling. Such was the case with the runoff shown in this video: No rain was falling in the area where this video was recorded.

“Calico Ghost Town”, California

Calico is a ghost town located in the Mojave Desert region of Southern California. Founded in 1881 as a silver mining town, today it is a county park located in unincorporated San Bernardino County off Interstate 15, three miles from Barstow. Giant letters spelling “CALICO”, on the Calico Mountains behind the ghost town, can be seen from the freeway.

At its height, Calico boasted a population of 1,200 people, and over 500 silver mines. The Calico Mining District became one of the richest in California, producing $86 million in silver, $45 million in borax and, of course, gold. Besides the usual ortment of bars, brothels, gambling halls and a few churches, Calico also supported a newspaper, the Calico Print.

During the mid 1890s, the price of silver dropped, and Calico’s silver mines were no longer economically viable. With the end of borax mining in the region in 1907, when borax mining moved to Death Valley, the town became a ghost town.

In 1951, Walter Knott, founder of Knott’s Berry Farm, purchased the town and began restoring it to its original condition referencing old photographs. Though five of the original town buildings exist today, many others were recreated as replicas of their originals on preexisting foundations.

In 1966, Walter Knott donated the town to San Bernardino County, and Calico became a county regional park.

Today, the park operates mine tours, gunfight stunt shows, gold panning, a restaurant, the Calico & Odessa Railroad and a number of general merchandise stores. It is open daily, and requires an entrance fee. During the tours, one may see silver ore so rich that there are gray spots of silver in the rock.

Some believe that Calico is haunted by the spirits of miners. The town was the basis for the “Kenny Rogers and the First Edition” album “The Ballad of Calico”.

Calico is a registered California historic monument, and is one of a number of ghost towns in California (other examples are Drawbridge and Bodie). It is the “official state silver rush ghost town” of California. Here is a video I did on Bodie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3GY53-Tgt0&fmt=18

Lake Havasu Police Tri-State Impact Round Up

One of the most intense reports I did at TV45 was a report on the Lake Havasu police department Tri-State Impact felon round up. Along with PDs from Bull Head City and Fort Mohave, Kingman and the Sheriffs Dept. they all got together to conduct a sweep of bail jumpers. I was able to ride along with the crew and detail their sweep. I felt like I was taping for COPS. Check it out.
