What was the effect on traveling when route 66 was bypassed?

i have to do a report on what happened when it was made and bypassed.

basically when 55 thru Illinois and 44 thru Missouri to about rout 10 expressways was finished in the mid 70′s people traveled those roads because it was faster
i love taking old 66 when i can
