I saw a TV show on Route 66 and I think this is what they said but I can’t find any supporting info on it.

The old US highway system originally just hung the US highway shield on existing state and county 2 lane roads in exchange for US Government paying money to maintain them . Then the US gov’t began to pay for repaving and widening of the 2 lanes into 4 lanes . Then in the 1950′s the Interstate system began with all new 4 lane limited access . When the Interstate system was completed in the 1990′s some of the old US highways were de certified like route 66 among others .
