I live in Phx, AZ and there are no trees here so I want to see some fall foliage this year without going far. Does anyone know if there are any cities in northern AZ that will have foliage?

Oak Creek Canyon around Sedona should be great and that is around 90 minutes from Phoenix (depending how long it takes to get past Anthem). Also, Prescott has some good fall colors. Flag is probably the best–lots of aspen–but it is a longer drive.

The best place in the state for fall color is in the White Mountains…east central Arizona. Think towns like Show Low, Pinetop, and Alpine. Still, fall in Arizona is nothing compared to other states that have real seasons. Flagstaff is good too and probably the most accessible to you…not far really, about a 2 hour drive. For the best colors, hit the forest roads north of the city around the San Fransisco Peaks. Not sure the best time to go, but I would guess early October.

That said, some of Arizona’s desert riparian areas (streams) have great fall color in early November, when the sycamore and cottonwood trees turn orange and yellow. For that I’m thinking the Hassayampa River near Wickenburg. Sycamore trees are wonderful in fall color. In southern Arizona we have the San Pedro river, which peaks the first half of November.

Just take a drive through Oak Creek Canyon (Hwy 89), the Canyon starts in Sedona and ends in Ft Tuthill at the Airport (south of Flagstaff) and on your drive back you will see plenty of Fall Colors, around Munds Park, until you enter the desert again.

The Flagstaff Arboretum’s website has weekly updates and photos of the fall colors, which have already begun to turn:
