I live in Golden Valley, AZ. Right now according to The Weather Channel.com it is 103 here. Where my parents are at, 30 minutes away, it is like 114 right now. They live in Ft. Mohave AZ. Anyways, my main air conditioner seems to be working very hard, but is unable to keep up with the heat. I turn it to high, with the thermostat at high as well and it still takes the compressor like 20 minutes to kick in. it sucks, so I got a new window mount A/C unit. This seems to alleviate some of the pressure that the roof mount is having, but it is still quite warm in my house. So anyways, now with 2 A/C units, my electric bill is going to go through the roof, but I don’t know what else to do. I have to keep my baby cool you know?

My question is mainly what you mommies are doing to keep your little ones cool, but also, what the heck did they do back in the day to keep their babies cool? Did the climate change and these days it is hotter, or are we just accustomed to A/C these days, and kind of spoiled? What do you ladies think?

right now its 105 and although my kids are 4 and 7 …i am also 7 months pregnant. We are in vegas were its hot constantly all summer long so this si just the start. It sucks when its hot cause you are stuck inside all day almost and then the kids get cranky and bored..ahhhh.
My advice for a baby is..fill the bath with couple inches o water let her splash..spray bottle misters work awesome!!!!..light clothing for you and baby..popsicles..frozen fruit for the baby etc..

It’s 93 degrees where we are. We pretty much stay inside when it’s this hot. :)

If you’re out of direct sunlight, it will be fine.
Just keep your baby in cool clothes, or just a diaper.
Put cold washcloths on her head, use a fan.

The past couple days have been MUCH cooler, but last week was just awful. We stayed inside, and I took my son to an indoor swimming pool. We didn’t spend a lot of time outside. It was just miserable.

I’m in northern British Columbia, Canada…it is 17 Celsius here and windy. We had a hot spell last week, but it really wasn’t that bad.

I could not live where you live …the heat would kill me. If it gets too hot I will be going swimming a lot more with my son, but I doubt it will be scorching like where you are. We have no AC :)

I live in Vegas and it’s 107 degrees right now. I keep my baby cool by keeping him indoors. (Yeah I know we are spoiled with AC but so what.) I also keep him hydrated all day long – giving him a fresh sippy cup every hour or so. When we go to the car, I put ice in his sippy to make it extra cold. When we go out, he always gets his sunblock, and he wears sunglasses to protect his eyes.

i think it is definitely hotter than it used to be…i blame it on the deterioration of the ozone. i live in blythe, ca right on the az border and it is normal to be in the 120′s in the summer, very hot! you just try to stay indoors as much as possible, a/c and fans, cold showers, or try to go swimming.

It’s 103 here today, also (which is nice, since the forecast predicted 108)!

We pretty much just stay inside with the AC and fans on. Evan’s just in a diaper and t-shirt. If he seems hot, I wipe him down with a cool washcloth, and he gets a cool bath before bed.

The electric bill will definitely be through the roof. We used to just suffer through the heat, but now we don’t hesitate to crank up the AC so the baby’s comfortable.

Edit: Yikes, Blondie! I went through Blythe a few years ago in July. Asked at a gas station how hot it was, and they said 120. I really thought I would melt!

I wonder that too!!! About what they used to do when it was hot back in the day! I’m in washington and its like 75 degrees so not too bad, but its going to be around 85 this weekend I guess. I’m just going to keep my kid in his diaper all the time and keep him hydrated. I get really nervous because my friends baby died from SIDS and there was speculation that it was because she had the heat up at about 80 degrees in the room….

It is very hot where I live- Dallas area. And we have ceiling fans in most of our rooms. So they are on all the time during much of the summer. This helps with the heat. And I don’t ever put my daughter in much around the house. A onesie is enough, and maybe a pair of socks.

And as far as before A/C. Realize we are spoiled to some extent, but also in many areas where it is hot frequently there just wasn’t that many people. Those areas were not highly populated until electric fans and then A/C. Because it is tough to keep an infant cool. I used to visit my grandmother in Missouri during the summer. She didn’t have A/C and we were there a couple times during heat waves. My mother used to mist down our sheets with water and she put cool towels at the windows and in front of the fans.

Honeslty…if your child was born with the heat he or she will be used to it. Its they way humans are we adjust to our surrounding….just wipe him or her down with a cool wet cloth if they get a little read and put water in bottle or sippy to drink and you could try bathtimes throughout the day put a swim suit on them and pretend they are outside in a pool but in a tub. Hope it helps!
