On August 21, 2006, the United States Census Bureau released data ranking the population growth of major metropolitan areas (population of 50,000 or more), as well as micropolitan areas (population of more than 10,000 but less than 50,000) in the nation. The Arizona cities of Flagstaff and Phoenix are relatively close to one another yet have contrasting climates. Why does this difference occur?
Phoenix is located at 1100ft above sea level, and Flagstaff is located 6900ft
5800ft difference, roughly for every 1000ft you go higher the air cools by about 5.4 degrees F.
so 5.8*5.4= 31.3 degrees
flagstaff is typically 31degrees colder than phoenix. And if you actually look at the temperature statistics its true.
Higher altitudes are colder because the air is thinner (there is less of it) and the less air there is the less heat it can hold. This is why even high mountains near the equator get snow, and why flagstaff is so much colder than phoenix,
I was offered a job at the hospital in Lake Havasu City, AZ. I’ve never been there before, so I don’t really know much about the area….except that it gets HOT (and I’m ok with that!) I’m flying out there in a couple weeks to check out the area as well as the hospital.
I’ve been trying to do some research on the internet to see what the areas like, but haven’t been finding too much.

What is there to do there….Do most people live in LHC or are there smaller towns around the area as well….I know there are quite a few retirees, but are there at least a decent amount of people my age as well? This is a wonderful place to live. My girlfriend (35) just relocated here with her 3 kids. She has a 3 bedroom duplex in a nice area for $650 a month. You can find a lot of houses for the $650-$850 range. You can play in or on the water; you can play in the desert with ATVs. Working in the medical field should certainly be stable employment. Don’t buy the idea that it is only a retirement town. I generally leave in the summer, but used to spend year-round here. 115 is NOT that bad…You get used to it by the 2nd year. Try not to arrive with a black car and a black interior! If you can’t find things to do here, that would be your fault. Lots to do for EVERY age. Town is really kid friendly, altho folks your age coming to party here on the weekends (like there are no rules or laws here) do tend to write crap about LHC as they feel they are entitled to violate laws here. Those are the folks who write bad. I have lived here since 2002. Costs to BUY a house are incredibly low. What was $275k in 2006 is now $120k. Email me if you like.
To add a little more: Parker is about 30 miles to the south, and Kingman is about 60 miles to the north. There really wouldn’t be any attraction to those towns if you had a job in Havasu that lets you afford $800 a month rent. They are cheaper…but you’d lose it in time and gas. Flying, as you likely found out, is either to/from Phoenix or Las Vegas. About 150 mile trip. I prefer Vegas due to fares and ease of getting in and out of the airport. Phoenix traffic sux. Taxes in AZ are pretty low, too…both income and property taxes. Needles, CA (45 miles away) has no redeeming feature….dirty and expensive. Use 86403 as a zip code and you can see the grocery prices here. Milk varies thru the year and is high right now at $2.00 a gallon. Low last fall was $1.50-$1.67. Gas is currently $2.599…and you can get up to 15 cents off by buying from $30 to $90 worth of groceries.

They will then give you forecasts far in advance (instead of the normal 10-days), but I’ve found these things continualy change as the date approachs. They have a reasonable base right now, so even if it isn’t snowing on that day, there should still be snow around at Snowbowl and up the mountain.
don’t listen to them. Laughlin is a nice place and it has the Colorado river going right through it. It’s not as wacky as Vegas and there has to be jobs at the hotels or casinos…. if you like heat and desert, you will like Laughlin.
Help with Grand Canyon wedding – (South Rim) – July 2010?
My fiance proposed to me last year while we were on holiday in Arizona so we decided to get married on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We are from Canada and are only having a few guests come with us – including his 3 children. We have a few plans sorted out….we are staying at the El Tovar, we already have the permit from the National Parks Service, the date will be July 29th (a Thursday), I bought my dress at Kleinfeld in Manhattan, he already has his suit, etc.
What we are looking for is details, perhaps from someone who may have been married there, that would help us with our arrangements. Also, if anyone has any vendor information that would be great! Like a hair salon (I’m guessing it will be in Williams, AZ), how to get to Grandeur Point and the what kind of weather can we expect.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated! 6 months to go and I can’t wait!
I can’t give you specifics about having weddings at the Grand Canyon, but as a frequent Grand Canyon visitor who grew up near there, I can answer some of your more general questions.
As far as vendors and hair salons go, while Williams is the closest town to the South Rim, it is pretty small. The town of Flagstaff is only a little further away from the canyon, but has about five times the population and thus a much greater number and wider range of services and facilities. Flagstaff is also a college town (NAU) and so has an especially large number of food and hair salon places on the university side of town (I personally prefer Alley Cat’s downtown, but there are plenty of others). So you may want to include Flagstaff when searching for vendors and services.
Grandeur Point is a relatively undeveloped overlook on the rim to the west of Yavapai Point. You can not drive directly to Grandeur Point. The closest access is to park at Yavapai Point and walk along the rim trail (about a half mile). Note that Yavapai Point is one of the most popular overlooks and so parking can be tough during the day (especially during the summer). Another option is to park at the old Visitor Center (near Yavapai Lodge) and take the Rim trail from there to Grandeur Point, but that would be a much futher walk.
As far as weather goes, while much of Arizona can be blistering hot in the summer, the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff and Williams are up at 7,000 feet elevation on the Colorado Plateau and thus have very mild summers. Summer time highs in late July rarely get above the mid to upper 80s. But be aware that July and August are monsoon season in northern Arizona which means a high chance of heavy clouds and possibly brief rainstorms in the late afternoon. To be safe, any outdoor events this time of year should be planned for the morning or very early afternoon at the latest.
It sounds like you have already made reservations with El Tovar, if not, do so quickly as summer is the prime tourist season at the canyon and rooms (especially El Tovar) fill up quick. If guests will be staying at the canyon, you should either reserve some rooms for them or give them advance notice as soon as possible so they can make their own reservations.
